¿DE DÓNDE ERES?

DESCRIPTION:

Where are you from? A simple question can become a demand to explain, defend, or prove who you are.

¿De Dónde Eres? confronts the anger and pain of being caught between conflicting expectations of what it means to be American and Mexican American. Not speaking Spanish becomes a reason to question your heritage. Claiming your country becomes an argument about whether you belong. You are expected to know a language others call your own, carry an identity others define, and answer for the ways you fail to meet either expectation.

Through layered words, a sculpted cactus heart, and projecting thorns, the painting gives physical form to that pressure. Beneath the frustration is a more vulnerable question: Who am I, when every answer seems inadequate to someone else?

This is not a search for another country to call home. It is the struggle to feel that you are enough in the one that is already yours.
