AMERICAN ME SERIES

American Me explores identity, heritage, culture, and belonging through a personal and distinctly American lens. Rooted in the artist’s own Mexican American experience, the series reaches beyond a single identity to consider the many histories, cultures, expectations, and contradictions that shape what it means to be American.

There is no single American story. American Me explores the experiences we inherit, the identities placed upon us, and the ones we ultimately define for ourselves.

Look a little closer. Throughout American Me, history, culture, memory, and identity are woven into the details. Some references are immediately recognizable, while others reveal themselves slowly. Each one adds another layer to the story, but what you see and what it means to you may be entirely your own.

HOMELAND

Homeland is a visual representation of the inner conflict of the Mexican American experience within the United States. Her images and symbols represent the struggle within ourselves, as well as the battles we face in the place we call home.

This land is our land. It is where we come from and where we belong. It is our past, our present, and our future.

Symbols of Mexico Conchas, pan dulce, cactus, flowers, candy, color, and familiar cultural objects bring everyday Mexican identity into a painting filled with much larger historical themes. They represent the traditions that survive through ordinary life.
